Ten Things I Know for Certain

1. The sun came up.

2. Bud is up. I heard breaking glass in bathroom and he came through looking for broom and dustpan.

3. My big dog was hungry. He gobbled every bite of dogfood.

4. We need to pick up branches in the yard. Bud cleared out around trees.

5. It’s going to be hot today. It’s July in Louisiana.

6. We will want to eat today.

7. Bud is going for his banjo. There will be music.

8. My plants want water. Again, it’s July in Louisiana.

9. I will fold laundry. The dryer just beeped.

10. Life at my house is simple but good.

Security Seeker or Adventurer?

Daily writing prompt
Are you seeking security or adventure?

I am seventy-three. I am definitely not seeking adventure. I have arthritis and no longer move fast enough for that. If adventure sneaked up on me, it would do me in. However, when I dream, I am in my prime, sometimes beyond my prime. Sometimes I fly, leap tall buildings with a single bound, or accomplish monumental feats effortlessly. I suppose I’ll have to be content with that. Actually, I never was adventurous, so nothing has changed.

Dinner Guest

If I could choose any guest, I’d invite Mark Twain. I love his writing above all others. It seems he’s speaking directly to me. He was so knowledgeable about human nature and put such a fascinating spin on his commentaries. I remember so many of his quotations. My favorite was Huck Finn’s struggle with his conscience about turning Jim, the runaway slave in.

“I’d got to decide, forever betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: ‘Alright, then, I’ll just go to hell’” (Twain 223).

Understanding

Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

Understanding gets better with age. I don’t expect an immediate response to problems as I did when I was younger. I also accept that some situations may not resolve so I accommodate them and move on. I understand disappointment is not the end of the world. I have learned to keep my expectations manageable.

What Time Do I Wake Up and Go to Bed?

I wish I could predict. I would love to have a regular time but I have a hummingbird sleep pattern. I am plagued with restless legs and knee pain, so I never know if I will sleep once I go to bed. I take Requip but I still get breakthrough cramps. Last night, I went to bed at eight and slept till seven. Tonight I went to bed at ten, slept about an hour then woke up with knee pain. I had forgotten to take my tylenol before I went to bed. I hope to be back to sleep by two. It will be nice if I sleep till seven. Besides that, I make a couple of bathroom trips nightly.

My sleep patterns got really messed up when I took call as an acute dialysis nurse. It was not uncommon to get called out between midnight and two several nights a week. Quite often, after finishing a late treatment, I’d lock myself in my unit and sleep a couple of hours before I had to start the day shift. If I were lucky, I’d work part of the day shift before going home to get an afternoon nap.

I still crave sleep.

Most Excited

I am most excited about the good young people who are coming of age. It is encouraging to see them taking action on their beliefs. I believe there are lots of strong people reaching the age where they can change things for the better.

…..for the sake of harmony

That’s easy, since I already did it. Bud is a tyrant with the television remote control. Long ago, I gave up television. Fortunately, Bud has other good qualities, so I gave up television. He fixates on programs about World War II, the Civil War, anything violin or guitar, blacksmithing, trees falling on houses, or other topics which fail to fascinate me. It is far wiser for me to focus on reading, crocheting, or the dogs, than frustration over mindless blather. Oh yes, I often indulge in cooking or cleaning while he tvs.

My favorite music

What is your favorite genre of music?

Folk music makes me happy.  It feels like something I could do, though I definitely can’t.  Since Andy Griffith introduced me to The Darlings, I’ve been hooked.  I loved the catchy, often nonsense lyrics, so catchy and easy to learn.  It was intended just for me.

Most Memorable Vacation

My most memorable vacation was a stay at a lakeside cabin. The entire family slept in the front room opening onto a screened in front porch. It was wonderful to drift off to sleep to the sound of my parent’s voices from the porch with the reflection the bright, full moon cast over the still, dark lake. The spooky, dark cypress trees still people my dreams. In the day, we picnicked, played on the beach and paddled in the cool water. We fished a bit and had a few thrilling boat rides. Once a day, we took our nickels and walked to the little store where I always bought the same thing, a stick of coconut coated candy called a chicken leg. No vacation since has been so perfect.
