Porch Party

Several years ago while visiting with my daughter,I bonded with her appealing cat. Thinking he’d enjoy a treat, when next I was out and about, I brought home and potted a lush catnip plant. Upon learning he’d already had catnip and vomited profusely. I had to reclaim my gift. I put it on the front porch, out of his “inside cat” territory. My room was adjacent to the front porch. About midnight, I heard an uproar. It sounded like a convention of Shriners. The neighborhood cats were partying. When I got up the next morning, all that remained was a shattered pot, soil, and shreds of catnip from one end of the porch to the other.

9. Dogs will play fetch with you all day long. The only thing cats will play
with all day long are small rodents or bugs, preferably ones that look like
they’re in pain.

10. Dogs will wake you up if the house is on fire. Cats will quietly sneak out.

Snake-Handling and the Rapture(Part 2 of Starry Night, Kathleen’s Memoirs of the Great Depression)

Starry Night (from Kathleen’s Memoir of The Great Depression Part 1)

“When me an’ my brother Jim was boys, we heard they was gonna be having a camp-meeting at one of them snake-handlin’ churches up in the hills.  Now we didn’ want nothin’ to do with snakes, but we thought it might be interestin’ to stir them church folks up a little.  We slipped out with the Rascoe boys an’ caught us up some cats an’ a dog or two an’ had’em in tow sacks.  We slipped up on the back side of the church an’ climbed up, pullin’ them bags behind us.  With all that singin’ and testafyin’, and speakin’ in tongues, them church folks couldna’ heard the devil comin’ up the river in a sawmill, so we didn’ have a bit o’trouble once they got started.  Them folks was naturally doin’ some carryin’ on!

Well, we give’em time enough to get to really git serious about their religion before we turned them dogs and cats loose on ‘em.  Them cats tore outa’ them sacks, like their tails was on fire, screechin’ and spittin’, with them dogs right behind ‘em.  Some of ‘em ended up bustin’ right up in the middle of them snake-handlers.  I mean to tell you, they threw them snakes down an’ they all run outside screamin’ an’ carryin’ on about the rapture.  You wouldn’a thought anybody that messed with snakes would’a got so stirred up about a few dogs and cats!

Squeaky and His Pet Squirrel Neighbor(Smarty Kitty Update)

Squeaky in window with squirrelSqueaky was a rescue kitty who lived with us about three years, more or less.  I considered him a delight.  Bud, not so much.  They had dominance issues they never completely worked out, but Squeaky gave it his best shot, taking swats at Bud till the last.  Here you see Squeaky on his sunning shelf in the window.  I put a bird feeder right outside to keep it interesting.  Of course, the squirrel had to get in the act.  They had a fine time together, playing through the window.  Buzzy, my American Esky dog was always jealous of the quality time Squeaky spent on his perch in the window, backing up far enough to see them playing together, alternately crying and bringing toys to attempt to lure Squeaky away.  Naturally, Squeaky ignored all that.    Sadly, we recently lost Squeaky to kidney failure.
