Traditions I have not kept

There was one rule my father fanatically upheld that I threw out the window as soon I left home. “No bare feet before May 1.” It made no sense to me. Should it be 80 degrees on April 30, we were still chastised for sneaking out in bare feet. Once Daddy made a rule, it was written in stone. Even after I was married, he told me I was wrong to go bare foot before May 1, to which I simply replied, “I’m grown now.”

His response, “Well, you try to raise your children right, then when they get grown they do what they want to.”…….long sigh.

I must have been such a disappointment!

Was Today typical?

So far it is. I woke at six, got straight out of bed, talked to the dogs a bit, and sat in my recliner. My small dog jumped in my lap and cuddled a while. When he lay down, I started on the daily prompt. I hear the birds chirping about their day to come. They seem to have a lot planned. My big dog snoring. Bud is bumping around in the back, so he’ll be up here soon, making coffee and stirring the dogs up. So far, it’s a typical day.

Me?

I live life simply: a cotton-dress with pockets is a must. My days are spent puttering around the yard with my dogs with my red wagon and shovel at the ready. I have no patience with shopping, society, or Facebook. It matters not about your house, income, or status. I enjoy time with a few good friends and family.

My Childhood Nickname

Linda Bug. I have no idea how I got my name. I assume my dad first called me that. I still remember it made me feel cherished. Sometimes, it was shortened to Bug. My favorite cousin never called me anything else. There are only a few people left who knew me by that name, Mother, my older sister, my brother, and Bud. I suppose Linda Bug is fading away.

Linda Bug is diapered baby in front row. Bud is right behind me.

Health and Wellbeing

Sadly, I fall short in this area. I bulldoze ahead and do what needs to be done. I am a retied RN, so I can’t claim ignorance. I make my routine doctor’s visits and take my medication, but jump into action when I perceive family need. I never put my needs first.

My Future Travel Plans

This one is easy. My immediate plans include a trip to Baton Rouge this weekend. There is a large estate sale we want to attend.

It is a pleasant for hour trip, only two bathroom stops. I have two Akita granddogs waiting to see me. They will be at the door, tails wagging, “What did you bring me?”

My own dogs will be at home with a sitter they love, so they’ll have to manage. We’ll get a good sniffing when we get home.

What do I listen to?

I was prepared to say “Nothing.” Then I listened. I hear fluorescent lights buzzing, a dog barking in the distance. The birds are leaving for work. I love that. Croc, my big dog is snoring. We need to get him a CPAP. Bud is also snoring back in the bedroom. Izzy is barking and running a bit in his dreams. My leather chair is creaking with my movements. I suppose I am listening to a lot of life.

Both boys stirred when I got photos so they are listening, too.

My Favorite Comfort Food

My favorite comfort food is biscuits, buttered hot from the oven. Mother made twenty-seven biscuits every morning. I’d wake to the squeal of the oven door and the scraping of the pan just before she called out, “Biscuits are in the oven.” That was our cue to hustle out of bed. The bedrooms were frigid in winter, so we’d jostle for space to dress in front of the kitchen space heater. When I was little, it was solid comfort to slide into clothes Mother had just warmed before the flames. Once dressed, we’d tie into breakfast with that pile of biscuits, the little guys draped in towels.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup COLD butter
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • The secret to excellent biscuits is COLD BUTTER. Really cold. Many times the biscuit dough gets worked so much that the butter softens before the biscuits even go in the oven. Try cutting the butter into small pieces and stick back in the fridge pulling out only when ready to incorporate into the dough.
  • Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Cut cold butter into flour mixture. Mix will be a bit lumpy.
  • Add in the milk and mix just until the ingredients are combined. The dough will be sticky but don’t keep working it. You should be able to see the butter pieces in the dough.

To roll out, turn mix on to floured surface. Sprinkle with flour and turn two or three times. Cut with biscuit cutter.

To hand roll, dust with flour and roll in flour dusted hand two or three quick turn to smooth a bit.

Brush tops with melted butter and bake 10 to twelve minutes till tops brown. Yields 12 Wrap in damp paper towel to reheat 15 seconds in microwave.
