Folk music makes me happy. It feels like something I could do, though I definitely can’t. Since Andy Griffith introduced me to The Darlings, I’ve been hooked. I loved the catchy, often nonsense lyrics, so catchy and easy to learn. It was intended just for me.
My most memorable vacation was a stay at a lakeside cabin. The entire family slept in the front room opening onto a screened in front porch. It was wonderful to drift off to sleep to the sound of my parent’s voices from the porch with the reflection the bright, full moon cast over the still, dark lake. The spooky, dark cypress trees still people my dreams. In the day, we picnicked, played on the beach and paddled in the cool water. We fished a bit and had a few thrilling boat rides. Once a day, we took our nickels and walked to the little store where I always bought the same thing, a stick of coconut coated candy called a chicken leg. No vacation since has been so perfect.
I express gratitude with a sincere thanks and if moved to do so, a return of the the favor, such as not returning a dish empty. For example, if I were given a pie, return the dish with a freshly baked pie. My neighbors ran the weedeater in my ditch. I have to return a kindness. I think I may give their beloved dogs a toy. It will just be an acknowledgement of their kindness.
Since I am way past being a kid, I have a boring list of surgeries but there is a surgery that immediately made me feel better. I had varicose vein repair surgery three times. After years of being a nurse, I had ugly, bulging varicose veins. The pain was a much bigger concern than cosmetic concerns. I had constant burning pain. After many years of varicosities, I developed restless leg syndrome. Varicose vein surgery relieved the acute vein pain immediately, but not the restless legs. I treat that very successfully with ropinerole. Thank goodness, that helped. I suggest people wear compression stockings for their leg health and seek early intervention. Take care of your legs.
My habits are humdrum. I take the dogs out early because they demand it, feed and water them as soon as I get in so I won’t get trampled, drink some juice while I dawdle about and sit under my small dog a while. I think his hiney is broken since he doesn’t want to sit on his own. Bud and I visit until I feel compelled to a bit of housework I can’t put off any longer unless I slip out to the yard to play with my flowers. Of course, more dog walks. We usually brunch about eleven.
Interacting with my dogs in their favorite way
My afternoons are free for writing, crocheting or whatever other things I chose. I avoid errands, grouping them on one day. Several times a week I visit Mother or take her out. On those days, I usually check Lowes for plant markdowns, the only shopping I like. Our nearby Lowe’s is the smallest in town. They get the same amount of stock as the bigger Lowes, so their markdowns are great
All written out, my life looks pretty mundane but I love it.
I’d have to claim a well-prepared steak is the most delicious food ever. I don’t want it that often, but when I’m ready, it’s great. I choose a steak with sufficient fat marbling and sprinkle it liberally on both sides with coarse Kosher salt. I let it sit for 1 to 24 hours. Next, I rinse and dry it with paper towels. It is probably salty enough, so I season it with coarsely ground black pepper and garlic powder. I grill it till medium rare, usually seven minutes on each side. It needs to sit five minutes before serving. It will be tender and moist. Best served with baked potato and salad. Try it!
Oh, that’s easy. It is a soft, loose, cotton dress or pants and shirt. In fact, that’s what I wear most days now. It’s great for blazing Louisiana summers and fine for our cool winters. Cotton clothes are inexpensive and easy care. When I retired, my happiest moment was donating my “nice” work clothes and shoes. I spend most of my time now in my “best” clothes, good old cotton!
I waste the most time doing housework, maybe two hours a day. It has to be done so I can enjoy the rest of my day, but I’ve never learned to like it. I do, however, enjoy a clean house. I never feel like reading, writing, working in my flowers and plants is a waste of time. Neither is time spent with family, friends, and cuddling my pets.
