October

What’s your favorite month of the year? Why?

I love October with its cool blue skies and cooling weather, such a relief from the blistering summer heat. The leaves are turning. The breezy days stir excitement. I feel so much anticipation for life.

Best of all, there is always that first day when the sky is heartbreaking blue, the promise of a new season.

Old Cemetery in Greenwood

What is your favorite place to go in your city?

There is an old cemetery in Greenwood, Louisiana I love. We lived near enough there to walk when my children were small. We enjoyed it like a park. After walking through the cemetery, the kids would wade and play in the clear water of the sandy-bottomed clear creek that flowed nearby. Afterwards, we’d picnic on its sandy banks. It was a wonderful time.

First Impression

What’s the first impression you want to give people?

I hope I am seen as open and friendly. I enjoy conversations and friendships. It is a pleasure to engage with those of all ages and types. Friendship is a gift.

Canada

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would probably choose Canada if I were choosing a home today. I really love the country around Banff. Dealing with the climate would have me making big adjustments since I’m from Louisiana. I wouldn’t miss the blazing summer heat.

Found

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found (and kept)?

Bud was nearing the end of nursing school as we neared the end of our funds. He was piddling around with his camera and opened a box of film that had been sitting on the shelf awhile. Disappointed to find it held no film, he assumed it was a rolled up instruction manual. Frustrated, he intended to trash it but unrolled it first. Stunned, he found it was a roll of hundred dollar bills: three thousand dollars in total! His hands were shaking when he came rushing in to tell me of his incredible find. He had no idea how long that box had been waiting on the shelf. It couldn’t have come at a more fortuitous time.

What part of your routine do you always try to skip if you can?

I put off ironing until I have several pieces. It seems like too much trouble to get the ironing board out for just a piece or two. I am partial to cotton, so all my clothes have to be ironed. I love the crisp look and the clean smell of nicely-pressed cotton. I also appreciate that fact that starched cotton repels spills and spots. I never dreamed when I was a kid and hated crisply starched clothes that one day I’d be starching my own.

Maya Angelou

Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

Under the circumstances, I am so glad I didn’t get to meet Maya Angelou, one of my greatest heroes. It would have been tragic. When I visited my cousin in Greensboro, North Carolina, she took me to tour the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. We were both in awe of its beauty. Perhaps my cousin was a bit too impressed. As we approached a busy traffic crossing, she almost bumped her car into Maya Angela and two other women. Ms. Angelou was startled and spoke out angrily to her. Though I didn’t actually understand the pearls of wisdom dropping from her lips, I inferred it was something like, “Watch where you’re going, you dumb …….!”

I am so grateful not to have made her acquaintance that day.

Famous

Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met?

This is a total washout for me. Before I was old enough to remember, I was taken to a rodeo where Lash LaRue, an old cowboy star appeared. That’s it!

Pets

What is good about having a pet?

The best part of having a dog is there undying love. Should a person be a total jerk, alienate everyone in their life, and not contribute anything to society, their dog greets them with total affection. Cats are just the opposite, making no effort to please. They domesticate and make servants of us. For some reason,, we find their sociopathy intoxicating. These pets appeal to the bipolar component of our nature.
