Exercise

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

Gardening gives me a workout. There’s the digging, hauling, bending. It keeps me active and makes my muscles complain but the reward is wondrous.

Mart Twain

What book could you read over and over again?

I have read Mark Twain’s works over and over.

Though I have read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel many times, I particularly love Huckleberry Finn. The young vagabond for his moral development in his treatment of Jim, an escaped slave. Though Huck ascribes to the values of the pre-Civil South and believes he should turn Jim in, he chooses to sacrifice his soul rather than betray his friend. I wish we all had Huck’s purity.

Huckleberry Finn

If you could be a character from a book or film, who would you be? Why?

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn seems to be a most admirable character. Having been brought up motherless by an alcoholic, abusive father, he is objective about relationships but accepting of true friendship. He is totally independent and nonjudgmental as evidenced by his treatment of the slave, Jim. The only time he shows a bit of loneliness is at his and Tom’s funeral when no one welcomes him home but is is accepting of loving kindness when it presents itself.

Best Friends

What animals make the best/worst pets?

For me, dogs make the best pets. I’ve had so many to love over the years. They fill the hole in my heart that my children left as they grew up. So many have found me when I wasn’t looking for them. One strayed up to my house and stole my heart. I picked one up on a freezing morning when I know she wouldn’t have lasted the day. We adopted one when just before he was euthanized. They are endlessly loving.

On the opposite end of the scale, I think snakes make horrible pets.

Work

What job would you do for free?

I would gladly help someone garden for free. I’d also teach cooking or canning for free. I would definitely not want to clean for free. That’s an onerous task. If anyone out there wants to clean for free, please let me know.

Community

How would you improve your community?

I could be more involved in my community. I live very quietly. I should get more involved in local and regional events.

Adaptation

How have you adapted to the changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic?

I don’t think a lot about Covid anymore. I do notice that I still keep the six foot space between myself and others. I strictly avoid anyone I know who is sick and crowds.

Career Path

When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?

My mother shot down my career path early. When I expressed my intention of being a cowgirl, Mother stomped that out immediately. “No, you’re not going to be a cowgirl.”

She gave my needs no consideration. It never occurred to me to argue. She was my mother, after all. She was “the boss.” Fortunately, I had a backup plan. “Then I’ll be a ballerina.” I’d recently admired a tutu.

“No, you can’t be a ballerina. Dancing makes you have big legs.”

I don’t know where she got that.

“You’ll probably do just like I did and get married and have kids.”

“That’s stupid! I’m not doing that!”

She didn’t like that smart alec answer. so smacked my bottom and sent me on my way. Just so you know, I never became a cowboy or ballerina but I did get big legs.

More

What do you wish you could do more every day?

I wish I could take a nap every afternoon. I have restless legs so I can’t sleep without medication.
