Welcome to My Writing Room

Welcome to my writing room.  I’ve surrounded myself with things that make me happy.  Most items are old.  I bought the tiny battered desk under the window as damaged.  The cane bottom chair was a gift from Mother. Her parents bought it used when they set up housekeeping with it in 1912.  She helped her father re-cane it in 1932. My grandpa bought her the old treadle machine for fifteen dollars in 1953.  I made my wedding dress on it.  It runs perfectly.  I still use it occasionally. The curtains are made of old, hand-me-down tablecloths. Needless to say, they don’t match, but I like them.  I bought the old dresser for eighty dollars ago many years ago.  A dear sister-in-law gave me the dresser scarf.  The music box is from my sister, the perfume bottles from my grandson.  The vintage picture frames are from Goodwill, as is the Teddy Bear.  I plan to make a rag rug soon.

The baby quilt on the chair was handmade by an ornery, old lady for my son.  She liked my mother-in-law, so thought enough of her to make this quilt.  My son was had been howling with colic for hours when she walked in and pitched to the quilt at me, saying, “Lord, deliver me from a squalling brat!”  It was a nice quilt.  I managed to thank her, but it didn’t make me like her a bit better, but more about her another day.

  1. This made me look round my room: my mother’s piano, the stool made by my father, the old cane chair, the Salvation Army bookcase and homemade book case, the block of ancient polystyrene (my computer seat), and the walls covered in family photos, my cousins photography, one daughter’s drawings, the other daughter’s theatre shots… my writing nest.

It’s a lovely place to be and to write. Must bring calm for you to concentrate. Everything is well chosen and personal. Very well!
I write at a desk full of stuff! Sometimes becomes a mess. These are things that I like but … I should have less stuff around.
You knew how to find a good balance amount of things you like near you when you write. Pity that your photos are small and do not see many details of “your place of writing”. Loved your place Ibeth!

  4. I love your writing room, Linda. It looks so calm, cozy but open enough to let inspirations flow… Love that! Oh, and I completely hear you regarding the quilt 😉

  5. I wish I had a writing room – it sounds so nice. Unfortunately, at the moment I have no such spare space, although in a way that isn’t so unfortunate since the reason I have no spare space is because I have three wonderful children and a wonderful husband and our house is just big enough for all of us. So currently, my writing space consists only of those necessities which make me feel relaxed and comfy – my dog and my cat and a place to sit. My dog and cat sleep by my head and my feet wherever I choose to write in the house. This makes any place comfy.
