I just love vintage pictures. What in the world do you suppose was going on here? I am going to hang on to this on. I know I will need it for a story sometime. It deserves screams for one!

Oh that is rather a disturbing photo particularly as Victo pointed out they were dead! II like vintage photos as a rule but this one is a bit too creepy for me!

Can’t imagine ever wanting to see this photo of my children. Surely parents were in shock when it was posed.

This made me think of something and then I remembered… Reminds me of the strange illustration in Alice in Wonderland of the Duchess and the crying baby, by the first Alice illustrator, Sir John Tenniel. Same positioning, same creep factor (for me). I can find a link if you like,

You are so right. Those illustrations always gave me the willies, as well as knowing Lewis Carroll was fascinated with the little girl.

It looks like a postmortem.

It is but why were they posed that way, and screaming?

I believe the mouths are in that position due to the upright position of the body. They commonly posed the dead for these photos in “natural” positions. I cannot tell how old they were but they must have been close to be placed that way. Perhaps they died from an infectious disease. If it were before or after rigor mortis, the jaw muscles would be flaccid allowing the jaws to drop open by gravity. The only way to combat that would be to tie it up which would also look… odd.
