  1. I was a primary teacher for a number of years and don’t believe in IQ testing. Some people get nervous when they take a test and don’t do well. Others are good at test taking. I had a friend who failed to get a passing grade to go to a certain high school and went on to get a Master’s Degree in Education. I never wanted to know what my IQ was. I don’t believe in putting people, especially children, into slots. It’s wrong and can be harmful in some cases, especially to the ego of a sensitive child. — Suzanne

People forget that IQ is only potential and is not an indicator of that individuals actual capabilities.

I would rather have someone with a 100 IQ give me 100% effort than someone with a 130 IQ and be an underachiever.

  3. Its a fascinating area for discussion Linda. I for one don’t hold with IQ as a measure of much. To me it means that on the day someone did the ‘test’ they scored a number which as assigned them to magic place in society.
I say as as IQ doesn’t measure common sense.
Some of the smartest people I know are people who for various reasons didn’t go all the way through school but possess innate intelligence that at time shocks and surprises me in a good way. For me intelligence is reflected in the way you live your life, how you view things, how open you are to discovering and exploring something new. Then once discovering something new being able to evaluate the importance to you and whether or not it is something you want to embrace.
I worked with a lot of kids with Aspergers Syndrome, high functioning autism. Super smart kids but with poor social skills and communication skills. They could solve super maths problems but couldn’t write a sentence to save themselves yet we would say their intelligence is very high.
I think IQ scores are on the whole a guide only. They suggest intelligence but as I once discovered the mail exchange was full of people with PHDs sorting letters….
