Literature

What was your favorite subject in school?

I loved reading. I used to tear through the stories in my reader. My favorite reader was Runaway Home. The father took a year off work to paint. The reader detailed their adventures while traveling the country in a camper. It seemed like a dream come true. I did not enjoy the reading aloud in class. I read ahead while trying to pay just enough attention to hear when I was called upon. It must have been misery for the poor readers waiting for their turn to read. I dreaded it along with them, knowing they’d have to laboriously stumble through a paragraph or two. I stayed in trouble for dashing through my work so I could pull a library book out of my desk.

  1. I remember reading aloud in class at a young age and coming upon the word handkerchief for the first time. Ugh. The worst thought was reading aloud from my shorthand homework in high school. I had a hard time reading my own chicken scratch.

I don’t think I ever had a favorite subject in school. I did enjoy my typing classes quite a bit.

  2. I’d actually find myself getting interested in the story we were studying, and my eyes would just naturally read ahead until I was totally involved in it ~ I’d get caught because I failed to hear my name called. Got in just as much trouble as if I’d brought my own book, though…

  3. I also hated to read aloud in class and never understood why we had to do it, as a much older person I realised it was the teachers way of seeing how good we could read but I still think it is a terrible thing to as child to do
