What were your parents doing at your age?
My dad died at fifty-seven so he never attained my age. My mother was healthy and happy living on her own.

My dad also died at 57. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking to think of how hard he worked all those years and never made it to retirement. Your mother is a treasure.

Daddy retired early at 54. He had a very good last four years. My mother has always been a delight. Daddy was a bear. She’s had many happy years on her own.

My father died at 62 and so never reached my age…and my mother was most likely gardening…..something she loved to do and did very well….

Same with Mother. She was a gardening fiend.

Oh boy. That must have been so hard on everyone. My daughter didn’t have kids till she was near thirty, so we definitely weren’t young grandparents. My son has none. Too bad. He needs to pay for his raising! He was a toot! Now, he’s a real fuddy duddy! How did that happen.

It’s so interesting to think back, but sad too.

My father, too, died before reaching my age, which makes me so sad because it was his hard work that made my retirement possible! He died at the age of 70. I am now 77.

As did my husband, now that I think of it. My mother lived to the age of 91–living alone the entire time, but my sister was in the same town, happily. Hope I last that long and in as good health.

It always brings me up short to realize I’m much older than he lived to be.

At 70, I have outlived three members of my family of origin — my mother, who died at 66 of cancer (and arguably medical malpractice); my eldest brother, who died at 69 of multiple organ failure due to obesity and diabetes; and my youngest brother, who died at 46 of multiple organ failure due to alcoholism and drug abuse. If I’m lucky I’ll take after my paternal grandmother and live to be a hundred. :-)

I feel the same way, Ibeth, and he made all of our lives so much better through his hard work…which was probably what led to his death.

What did he do? I’d love to know more. I worked too much trying to get my husband through nursing school. I fear I neglected my kids, though he was a good father and was home when he wasn’t in class. He didn’t cut them any slack.

I’ve written two books that include poems about him. His folks homesteaded, coming out to SD when he was a toddler. He pretty much single-handedly saved the place during the depression.. worked so hard at running a dam-building operation in addition to handling the farm/ranch. He built that small homestead up into one of the largest ranches in that part of the state. Sent all of his girls to college, staked us all to enable us to buy our first homes. Both of my parents were hard-working, fun, talented, incredible people. Wish I’d told them this!

What a man! He really had drive and loved his family. Those kinds of things touch family so far down the road.

You must think of that everytime your investment pays off. I hope it works for my kids like that. It’s occurred to me we should have traveled more.
