History

What major historical events do you remember?

Like everybody of my era, I remember the JFK assassination. I was in the eighth grade sitting on the bleachers in the gym with friends . It was surreal. It made such an impact, I even remember what I was wearing, a green corduroy jumper dress with a pleated skirt. It was such a shock it seemed like an Alice in Wonderland experience. I instantly understood nothing would ever be the same. I lived in the segregated deep South, so I am sorry to say some prejudiced ,younger students cheered but were quickly shamed into silence. It was a life-altering moment.

  1. I remember when Kennedy was killed. I was with my Mother in her sitting room in Kent England. I had no idea at that point that I would be living in the States.
I remember Queen Elizabeth’s coronation and her marriage to Prince Philip…and all the celebrations that followed. So many memories…..and of course 9/11 – when I was in my studio in Wales and the BBC came on the radio and asked everyone who had a tv close at hand ot turn it on……..

  2. For sure that was a day we will never forget. I was in English class in Jr. High school, and they just announced it over the loudspeaker. We were all shocked. It was also memorable because it was the day before my birthday.

  3. Yes, I remember it exactly. In high school, but home in the afternoon and resting. The Robert Kennedy assassination, the moon landing, shuttle Challenger explosion, and other major events are seared in my memory. Good posting!

  4. I was a jr. in high school in a very small town in South Dakota. We were all in our desks in the assembly hall and our Science teacher came down the steps from the principal’s office and said “People, I have a sad announcement. The president of the U.S. has just been shot.” We were supposed to present the afternoon performance of our Jr. class play that afternoon and it was cancelled, but we did have to perform it that night. They let school out and I remember walking downtown and watching coverage on a TV. in the window of the hardware store. The day of the funeral, I went out to a friend’s place to ride horses and we all came in and watched the funeral with her folks. Such an unbelievable experience.
