Finish the Story #6

Sixteen year-old Stephanie worked at the local Acme Supermarket. She wasn’t working there to earn enough for a cell phone or save for a car. Her father had died of suicide a year ago. Along with their heartbreak, the family was left impoverished since his life insurance didn’t pay off.

Her mother worked at the local garment factory at a low wage and took her eleven year-old twins with her to clean a couple of houses on Saturdays. She also drew social security.

Stephanie had great sympathy for other struggling families. In her misguided sympathy, she sometimes didn’t scan some of their groceries. One day the suspicious manager caught her.

  1. As the manager spoke Stephanie started to cry and everything tumbled out and she started to choke on her words, to make matters worse this happened in front of customers, he didn’t even have the decency to take her somewhere private. He told her to stop crying, get her things and leave she was fired.

As she left the store she was approached by a woman who said she saw and heard all that happened and even though was she did was wrong it was done from a good place, Steph nodded and said it was. The lady the told her she worked for a charity that ran a store selling groceries and other household goods to those doing it tough at a discounted price and she wanted to offer Steph a job there.

Steph took the job and was given the address and told she could start as soon as she went in and took care of the paperwork, the lady asked when she would like to do that, Steph said how about in 2hrs time.

The following day Steph started her new job and after a couple of hours knew she not only loved working there but had met the man for her, he was working as a stockboy and he was so kind and had such a soft caring voice she just fell for him.

Now she just had to get him to notice her.

Sometimes getting fired is a good thing.

  2. The manager pulled Stephanie aside and asked her why she didn’t scan all the groceries. She replied by sharing her personal story and that she felt bad for the family because she knew how hard it was. Her boss sat there for a moment then said, let’s put together a big grocery surprise for the family. Stephanie was ecstatic. She even suggested he think about giving a grocery basket to a poor family every month. He was a good hearted man and also knew he could get some publicity for the grocery store so it became a monthly practice and he set the paramiters of what went in the basket and let the employees fill the cart. Maybe they would learn a lesson too.
