What positive events have taken place in your life over the past year?
My ninety-six year old mother sold her home and moved into an independent living apartment. She is extremely happy there. She’s made many friends. I don’t worry about her being alone and falling now. She eats with her friends in the dining room and has gained four pounds. She walks twice daily and is stronger and more steady. She said she wishes she’d moved there ten years ago.

I’m 52 and have an only child. The last thing I want is for him to worry about me being lonely and falling in my “old age.” I remind myself daily (because I know it is not an easy decision for anyone involved) to be open minded about going into assisted living when the time comes. So happy to see your mother happy…. and it was comforting to hear that she wished she would have done it sooner. Best wishes to you both.

Me too! She only weighs 104 pounds. All of her children are big people. My dad was 6’3”. She was 5’2” at her tallest. Size six clothes are roomy on her.

Yes! However, I do remember how my mother insisted on staying in her home – even when she needed help. Little by little, her friends all faded away. I know she became very lonely. Your mother is wise to have moved where there are people to help and friends.

This could be my brother and his wife (both 95) but they resist moving and instead struggle with the upkeep of a house and yard. Kudos to your mom!

She’s so precious. What a wonderful “good thing”! I’m so thankful to be here. My list is long. It’s overwhelming. My special homemade bag goes with me to places that challenge me~ like treatments~ and also, when I’m celebrating other things like schools. I’ll not take the good things for granted~ I know you don’t either! 💚❤️💚

I don’t. Since I write daily I am much more observant. I hope your treatments aren’t too rough on you. I didn’t have chemo when I had uterine cancer, just surgery and radiation.

They’re not too bad. I did chemo, radiation, then surgery. These injections and infusions are a mix. I feel icky and flu-like. My stomach and some pancreatic pain (I had a touch of pancreatitis), but I pick up things from schools too, I’m sure. I’m going to go enjoy Christmas lights with a girlfriend later so I’m blessed! I hope you have a great weekend!

She is so happy. I am happy to see her thriving. Best of all, she has no steps to deal with, cutting her fall risks. I visit her twice a week now instead of twice a day.

I remember when my own Mom got to that place where we had to keep her from using the stairs. It was hard on us all.

Mother is sharp enough to know they’re dangerous. When my poor mother-in-law had ALS and Alzheimers. It was so sad. She couldn’t remember she couldn’t stand. It was just awful. We couldn’t keep her safe. She ended up falling and breaking her ankle.

It sounds horrible to say but I was glad when Mom’s mobility got to the place where she could not get up without help. Until then we dealt with the same thing and there were several falls. We were so fortunate none of them ended up in a broken bone. One in particular I was certain would end up with her in a nursing home, but she miraculously did not get anything more than a few bruises. We were also fortunate to have plenty of hands in the family to take shifts and that Mom had enough money that when we couldn’t be home we could hire some extra help to be with her.

We all rotated out. It was impossible to keep her safe. The only thing she couldn’t manage to work was a recliner. If we could get her to sit in that she couldn’t get up on her own. She’d sleep safeliy in it. It was a hard time. Once she broke her ankle she never got to go back to her house. It was awful.
